A Newry cemetery has been attacked and vandalised for the second time in six months.

Police are currently investigating another vandalism spree overnight on Saturday in Monkstown Cemetery.

Pouchers Funeral Directors said they were contacted around 10.30am on Sunday morning by “yet another distraught family traumatised to find their loved ones grave has been severely vandalised”.

Posting on Facebook, along with images from the graveyard, they said: “Police were tasked and are currently investigating.

“This is totally sickening and heartbreaking. The loss of a loved one is difficult enough without this mindless destruction. This is not the first time this has happened in Monkshill and we will be meeting local councillors and council management to call for extra security measures and in particular CCTV to be installed immediately.”

A similar incident occurred in July this year, where graves had items removed and strewn across the area. Some items were broken beyond repair.

There had been calls for increased security at the time.
