Cyclist fled from police through Newry city centre done for dangerous cycling

Sugar Island in Newry

A Newry cyclist who fled from police through the city centre has been done for dangerous cycling.

Daniel Raczka, of Barcroft Park, Newry appeared before the city’s Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with resisting police, dangerous cycling and failing to stop for police.

The 40-year-old, who had a live warrant against his name, was spotted by police cycling along the Downshire Road at approximately 10.10am on March 6.

Police pulled up alongside Raczka on New Street and signalled for him to stop, however, the defendant looked at police and then cycled off into Basin Walk, entering the no entry sign.

He failed to give way with the junction at Sugar Island and cycled across through no entry signs into Bank Parade.

A prosecutor told the court that Raczka “fled police for approximately five minutes through Newry city, driving through numerous no entry signs and stop signs and cycling against the flow of traffic”.

She added: “He was not wearing any protective equipment or cycling helmet.”

Raczka was apprehended in Monaghan Street car park, where he resisted arrest, having to be restrained to the ground.

District Judge Eamon King fined Raczka £150 for resisting police, £100 for failing to stop and a further £100 for cycling dangerously.
