“A refuge and a safe harbour for people struggling with addiction” is how Cuan Mhuire in Newry has been described by on its 40th anniversary.

Forty years ago on June 29, 1984 Kerry born Sisters of Mercy Nun, Sr Consilio Fitzgerald opened Cuan Mhuire Addiction Centre on the Armagh Road in Newry.

Over the past 40 years the Cuan Mhuire Centre, now based on the Dublin Road in Newry, has supported individuals and their families through the turmoil of addiction.

Sr Consilio and her committed and dedicated team have helped restore hope and change the lives of many thousands.

Speaking at the celebration of 40 years of support, Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said: “Cuan Mhuire has treated every person that has come through their doors with respect and dignity. Thousands of people from across Ireland have been made to feel special and hopeful, despite a sense that their lives were broken.

“It was powerfully poignant to see Hale Williams officially cut the ribbon on a new residential block, on the day that Hale himself is celebrating being 40 years sober, after being the first person admitted to Cuan Mhuire in Newry, back in 1984.

“We are extraordinarily fortunate to have a facility as exceptional as Cuan Mhuire located in Newry. They have restored hope for countless families across our island and given them a chance at a fresh start.

“Cuan Mhuire has stood a sure shield and a shining light for people and families the length and breadth of our island. As a community, we are forever indebted to Cuan Mhuire, and it is a debt that we can never fully repay.

“My hope is that people continue to support this life saving organisation for generations to come.”

Also speaking at today’s celebrations, First Minister Michelle O Neill, said: “A great day marking 40 years of the Cuan Mhuire addiction treatment and rehabilitation centre in Newry, with the launch of new state-of-the-art apartments for those in need.
