A Newry man convicted of murder – and currently serving a life sentence – has been arrested more than a year after going on the run from prison.
Thomas McCabe has been extradited from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland as a result.
McCabe was arrested in the Republic of Ireland on Saturday, August 10 and extradition proceedings were completed today, Tuesday, October 22 with his successful return to Northern Ireland.
The 60-year-old, who was jailed for life with a minimum 17-year term for the 1990 murder of Richard Hunt in London, was sought by the PSNI for being unlawfully at large from prison since August 2023.
Sergeant Davey from the International Policing Unit said: “PSNI continue to work closely with authorities in the Republic of Ireland to return fugitives to Northern Ireland.
“We will continue to work closely with An Garda Siochana to locate those who abscond the justice system.
“Our message is clear to anyone who has left Northern Ireland to avoid the consequences of their actions: we will use all powers available to have you arrested and returned to Northern Ireland.”
McCabe was previously on the run for more than two years before being arrested by Gardaí in 2020.
On that occasion he had been released from prison on licence, which was then revoked after several breaches.
