Burglars who robbed and ransacked the home of an elderly Newry couple have been branded “heartless criminals”.
The incident happened in the Ashfield Avenue area of the city between 9am and 12.50pm on Friday.
According to the PSNI, a large quantity of cash and jewellery was taken, along with items of great sentimental and personal value to the couple.
Newry City Councillor Geraldine Kearns has said that those who carried out the robbery were “heartless criminals who cared nothing about the damage both financial and emotional that they inflicted on their victims”.
And she added: “I would urge all to be vigilant and alert to suspicious activity. Please do not hesitate to report any such activities.”
The PSNI are appealing for help to catch the culprits.
A spokesperson urged: “Anyone who might be able to assist the PSNI with apprehending these thieves should contact them immediately on 101 and quote the reference 779 of 31/05/24.”
