A Newry GAA club has led tributes following the sudden passing of an underage player they warmly regard as a “privilege to coach”.
Twelve-year-old Shea Haughey, from the Ballyholland area of Newry, passed away on March 23 at home.
The young man’s death has sent shockwaves across the local community. Many simply cannot come to terms with the tragedy that comes with the loss of such a young and promising life.
In September of this year, Shea had entered into life at ‘big school’, joining the Year 8 class at St Joseph’s High School, Newry.
And, he was off to a flying start. In October the school proudly announced that he had been appointed Vice Prefect for his class – an absolute honour that he would have worked hard to obtain.
As well as the academic, the young man also excelled on the sporting field.
He was a valued player with Ballyholland Harps GAC and the club are entirely devastated to have learned of his shock passing.
In tribute to the young man, the club said: “Everyone at Ballyholland Harps GAC extends our sincere condolences, love, and prayers to Davy, Clare, Rebecca, Evie and the entire family circle at this incredibly difficult time.
“Shea will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His coaches spoke of him as one of the warmest, kindest, and most genuine young men they ever had the privilege to coach — always smiling, always a pleasure to be around, and a true credit to his family and club.”
To Shea’s grieving family, they said: “Please know that as a club, we stand with you and are here for you in any way we can.”
As a mark of respect, the club have cancelled all U14 football activity until further notice.
Passing on their sincerest condolences, one person added: “I’m so, so sorry to be reading this horrific news, my deepest condolences to you Claire and Davy and entire family! May God carry you through the unimaginable days ahead xx A beautiful boy. RIP Shea.”
Another said: “Life is cruel to take away such a young little boy. Condolences to the whole family and his wee teammates in Ballyholland.”
A death notice described Shea as the loving son of Claire and David, treasured brother of Rebecca and Evie and cherished grandson of Mary and Martin (Keenan) and Vera and David (Haughey).
Funeral arrangements are to be confirmed.
