A major environmental improvements scheme is expected to get underway in Markethill early next month.
It is the last of three towns in the ABC borough to feature under the £2m package.
Environmental improvements were carried out in Rathfriland and Gilford over the spring and summer.
Now it is the turn of Markethill, with the chosen contractor, Northstone, expected on site on Monday, October 5.
Works will start at the Dolphin Takeaway and progress along Main Street, with upgrades to include improved paving, kerb enhancements and new street furniture to “further enhance the town centre”.
The works will be phased throughout the scheme.
The first phases of the project will see work starting on Main Street, before Northstone pull off site temporarily during the Christmas embargo period.
The contractor is then due to return again at the start of January.
From there, the remaining phases of the scheme within Main Street, Fairgreen Road, The Square, Keady Street and Mowhan Road will be carried out until completion in Spring 2027.
Ahead of next month’s start, residents and businesses are invited to attend a public drop-in session on Thursday, September 24, from 4pm to 7pm, at the Old Courthouse, Markethill, to learn more about the project and meet the team behind it.
The three-town collaborative programme is being carried out in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, the Department for Infrastructure, and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, speaking previously when the contractor was appointed, said it was a “great opportunity to strengthen and revitalise these rural towns”.
And he added: “This £2 million investment will transform key public spaces by improving accessibility, upgrading paving and lighting, and creating safer and more welcoming shared spaces.
“These enhancements will support local businesses and improve the experience for residents and visitors, helping these towns to thrive as vibrant and attractive places to live, work and visit.”
