A Lurgan teen who recently became the youngest person ever to swim the North Channel has received Civic Recognition for the record-breaking attempt.

Fifteen-year-old Oscar Black completed the mammoth solo effort from the Gobbins in Northern Ireland to Portpatrick, Scotland in July of this year.

The swim took him a total of 16 hours and 38 minutes, completing a distance of 46km in that time.

That same week, ‘Awesome’ Oscar was also named as one of 20 swimmers from Lurgan Amateur Swimming Club to have achieved tough qualifying times to compete in the Irish Summer National Championships in Dublin and Limerick later that month.

Deputy Lord Mayor Jessica Johnston was delighted to meet Oscar and his family to host a Civic Reception to mark the fantastic achievement.

Oscar was joined by his family and his support swimmer, Jessika Robson – who is a record-breaking swimmer herself – at Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre, where he was congratulated by the Deputy Lord Mayor and also Councillors Kyle Savage and Peter Haire.
