Highly intoxicated man had ‘stupidly’ got drunk following release from prison

Defendant appeared unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and he was holding a half empty bottle of Buckfast

A man who “stupidly” got drunk shortly after getting out of prison is “starting to turn his life around” according to his solicitor.

Court heard the 32-year-old was discovered extremely intoxicated with half a bottle of Buckfast in hand by police.

Kieran George McCavana, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to the offence of simple drunk at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday.

Prosecution outlined that on October 10, at around 7am, police were called to SuperValu on Flush Place, Lurgan, to reports of an extremely intoxicated male being abusive towards staff.

Officers arrived to find the defendant, who was highly intoxicated, standing outside the entrance to the store.

He appeared unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and he was holding a half empty bottle of Buckfast.

Police tried to get McCavana to supply them with an address but he did not and was subsequently arrested.

Defence solicitor Kevin McCamley stated: “This is a man with a long checkered history with alcohol. You can see his record most of which was committed whilst he was under the influence of alcohol.

“He had just got out of prison and he stupidly went out to get drunk.”

He continued: “He has been on bail since and has been starting to turn his life around.

“He has not breached bail conditions including a ban on alcohol and a curfew. He also has a job interview today.”

McCavana was ordered to pay a fine of £150, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 18 weeks.
