Learn Irish with Armagh GAA

Armagh GAA will once again be hosting the popular intensive Irish language courses in the Athletic Grounds in Armagh on Saturday 11 May between 11am and 4pm. The Irish classes, which are organised in conjunction with Irish language organisation CAIRDE Teo, cater for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners. The cost of £10 includes lunch. The development officer from the Department of Culture’s Líofa campaign will be present to speak about the project and to encourage learners in Armagh to sign up to the campaign. The Líofa campaign aims to encourage learners to sign up to a personal commitment to gain fluency in Irish by the year 2015. If you would like to book a place on the course, contact Seán on 028 3751 5229 or sean@cairdeteo.com.

As well as the classes, CAIRDE Teo also organise a monthly Irish language hillwalking club called Siúil. Members of the group recently visited the Mourne Mountains, walking on Sliabh na gCloch or Mountain of Stones (known as Rocky Mountain in English), Torr na mBroc or Tor of the Badgers (known as Tornamrock in English) and Taobh Dochrach or Difficult Slope (known as Tievedockeragh in English). The hillwalking group will be organising an Irish language hillwalking weekend in the Donegal Gaeltacht on Saturday 25 May and Sunday 26 May. The group will climb Eachla Mór and Eachla Beag, Aghlamore and Aghlabeg, two of the so-called Seven Sisters which make up the Derryveagh mountain range. The group will stay in Bun Beag and will visit the reknowned Cabaret Craiceáilte in Tigh Hiúdaí Bhig. The Cabaret Craiceáilte is organised by RTÉ radio and television personality Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí and is a celebration of modern Irish language music and has featured Irish language rock, pop, reggae, rap and traditional music. The weekend will cost £40 which includes the price of the bus which will leave Armagh and return on Sunday 26 May, bed and breakfast accommodation and the walk itself.
