Concerns have been raised after a number of cats were dumped at a rural beauty spot between Keady and Newtownhamilton in what has been described as a deliberate act of animal cruelty.

Sinn Féin councillor Bróna Haughey said approximately 11 cats were abandoned at Carrigatuke Viewpoint on Sunday afternoon.

According to the councillor, a car registration plate was noted at the scene and has since been reported to animal welfare authorities.

“Thankfully, one cat has already been re-homed thanks to the kindness of an animal activist, Claire, who travelled from Derrytresk to help rescue the animals,” Councillor Haughey said.

The remaining kittens were cared for overnight before being taken into the care of the Northern Ireland Cat Centre, where they will be looked after until they are ready to be re-homed.

However, despite hours of effort, at least four of the older cats were not captured and remain missing.

Cllr Haughey is now appealing to residents in the wider area to remain vigilant.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to catch at least four of the older cats after hours of trying, so if any strays turn up at your home, please let me know,” she said.

Describing the incident as “wholly unacceptable and cruel”, the councillor said it was not the first time animals had been dumped in the area.

She urged anyone struggling to care for their pets to seek help rather than abandoning them.

“I ask people to please surrender their animals with compassion by contacting local charities and shelters that are there to help you,” she added.

Anyone with information relating to the incident or who comes across stray cats believed to be linked to the dumping is encouraged to contact animal welfare organisations or their local representatives.
