Fuel laundering waste dumped at Carrigatuke viewpoint sparks calls for action

Fuel laundering waste has been illegally dumped once again in the Carrigatuke area, this time at View Point Road, prompting fresh calls for tougher action and improved monitoring of the site.

The latest incident involves toxic by‑products from fuel laundering operations being abandoned in the popular beauty spot, raising concerns about the risk of contamination to nearby waterways and wider environmental damage.

The material has been reported for urgent clean‑up, amid fears it could seep into local watercourses if not removed quickly.

SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon said: “It’s bad enough that the greedy so‑and‑sos behind this operation pump crap fuel into our cars, but they then expect everyone else to clean up after their toxic mess.

“They avoid tax on the fuel, and then expect the taxpayer to pay for the clean-up too. Says it all really.

“I’ve reported this for urgent clean‑up before it seeps into local waterways. I’ve also asked the Forest Service to look seriously at installing cameras in the area and to carry out a deep clean, the whole site is absolutely littered.

“As the landowner, the Forest Service has a responsibility here. DAERA wouldn’t be long chasing a private landowner if this kind of mess was found on their land and the same standards must apply here.”
