WATT a shame! ‘Financial constraints’ put paid to popular Moy Christmas light switch on

'Without additional assistance, we may not be able to continue this cherished tradition'

A popular traditional Christmas Lights Switch On event in Moy will not go ahead this year.

Charlemont and Moy Development Association (Camda) made the announcement following, what they described as “several challenges,” with the primary concern being “financial constraints”.

A spokesperson for the group explained: “Despite an annual contribution from Mid Ulster Council, this funding does not cover costs.

“Additionally, with a small committee, we have struggled to allocate the necessary time and resources for adequate fundraising efforts.”

While there will undoubtedly be an amount of public disappointment surrounding the loss of this year’s event, the committee are in the process of doing all they can to safeguard the event for future years.

“Looking ahead, a substantial venture will be required to sustain our villages’ annual festive lighting and the associated event,” continued the spokesperson.

“This work is already underway, as we collaborate with local councillors to explore various options.

“Nonetheless, we also require support from the community to ensure that next year’s illuminations and festive event can proceed.

“Without additional assistance, we may not be able to continue this cherished tradition.”

For now, the big ‘switch on’ might be postponed, but there is still light at the end of the tunnel for Moy and Charlemont’s residents.

Said the spokesperson: “We will make every effort to illuminate the trees in Moy square, and install decorative motifs on selected lamp-posts in Charlemont. All these will be set-up by 1st December.”

Additionally, Camda are encouraging the public to attend their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday January 21, 2025 at 7.30pm in St James’ Church Hall, Moy Square.

“We need people to come along, learn about our efforts and lend their support as the group endeavours to continue its mission of “bringing our community together” through the annual Christmas “light up our community” event, and other projects.”
