The Cohannon Inn has closed its doors with immediate effect, leaving staff and regular customers stunned just weeks before the busy Christmas period.
Notices simply reading “closed” have been posted in the windows of the long‑established hotel and restaurant complex, situated off the M1 near Tamnamore, a familiar stop‑off for motorists and a popular venue for family occasions and functions.
Staff were reportedly informed by email on Sunday night that the business – operated in recent years by P&L Worrall – “would not be opening tomorrow, or in the future under P&L Worrall”.
The message went on to say that trading over the last two years had been “difficult” and that the company had “reached the point where we have had no option but to appoint an Insolvency Practitioner to wind the company up”.
Management acknowledged the announcement “may come as a shock” and thanked employees for their “hard work and commitment over the years”, adding that they had “thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Cohannon and wish you all the best in the future”.
SDLP councillor Malachy Quinn said he was “very sorry” to hear of the closure.
“I’ve been there many times over the years, whether for family dinners, wedding morning breakfasts, lunch meetings or just a bite to eat, and I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad meal or a bad experience,” he said.
“My thoughts are particularly with the staff who now face an uncertain future, especially with Christmas just around the corner. It’s a worrying time for them and their families, and I sincerely hope they can find new employment as soon as possible.
“If any members of staff affected by the closure need advice, assistance or support, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’ll do whatever I can to help. A sad day for local hospitality. Thanks to all the staff, past and present, for the great service and warm welcome over the years.”
Independent republican councillor Dan Kerr also voiced concern, saying the news that staff had been informed of redundancy by email was “sad” at any time, but “close to Christmas creates extra anxiety”.
“If any of the staff need support or advice, feel free to get in touch with me,” he said, adding that he has contacted Mid Ulster District Council “to see if any additional support can be provided”.
