A Dungannon man who was found with cannabis in a Pringles can and pregabalin in his home after search warrants were executed has been given community service.

Daniel McAlinden (36) – of Castle Gardens – appeared before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court, charged with possession of the Class B and Class C drugs.

Outlining the facts of the case, the prosecution explained that on February 26, police conducted a search of an address in Dungannon by virtue of two warrants.

Entry was gained by force due to no answer at the door. The resident, who identified himself to police as McAlinden, arrived at the property while police were conducting the search.

Police found pregabalin and cannabis on his person and throughout search of property also found cannabis in a “Pringles jar”.

McAlinden was cautioned and made no reply.

A notebook interview was conducted and admissions were made at interview.

Police asked, “Is that cannabis?” McAlinden  replied “Yes” and when asked, “The pills that were found, pregabalin, are they yours?” he also said “Yes”.

The court heard that the defendant does have a relevant record.

District Judge Rafferty explained: “The short sentence report suggests a period of community service, which I think might be appropriate in the circumstance.”

In respect of each count, Judge Rafferty ordered McAlinden to complete 40 hours’ community service.

McAlinden was warned: “If you don’t do it you will be back before me to be re-sentenced.”

A destruction order was made for the drugs.
