Work is well underway at a new 480-space Park and Ride facility at Moira Train Station that will “enhance the overall parking capacity” at the location.
The Translink project commenced in July of this year and is set to be completed by the summer of 2026, enabling more people to enjoy the convenience of rail travel and supporting better regional connectivity and reliable alternatives to car-only journeys.
Translink will be working in partnership with experienced contractors FP McCann Ltd. to deliver this major project.
This expansion is part of Translink’s ‘Better Connected’ strategy, which aims to promote sustainable travel and improve public transport accessibility across Northern Ireland.
The Moira site is considered one of Translink’s most important Park and Ride locations due to its position on the busy key southern rail corridor.
Planned Enhancements include accessibility upgrades – including designated accessible parking bays and new, improved pedestrian footpaths – to access Moira Train Station; enhanced security and safety features, such as CCTV, security fencing, and low-impact flood lighting for passenger comfort and reassurance; new covered cycle shelters to support active travel options; environmental considerations, including a storm water retention pond to support sustainable drainage and environmental resilience; high quality landscaping to enhance the site’s visual integration with its surroundings while protecting and enhancing local biodiversity and bus access points to facilitate seamless multimodal transport connections.
In terms of road access, the project will deliver several vital improvements to the surrounding transport infrastructure. Station Road will be widened to include a new right-hand turning lane into the site, helping to ease traffic flow and improve safety.
Public realm enhancements will include the installation of new street lighting and a footpath extension, significantly improving pedestrian connectivity to the nearby train station.
A new ‘Kiss and Ride’, a new passenger drop-off area and turning circle will be constructed, improving accessibility and convenience for passengers being collected or dropped off.
Users of Moira Train Station and the existing Park and Ride will not be impacted while these construction works are underway.
When completed the enhanced facility will offer more people the option of using the train as a sustainable transport option, encouraging modal shift to help reduce congestion, cut carbon emissions and support Northern Ireland’s climate goals.
Translink say the project has already attracted strong interest from the local community, highlighting the clear demand for improved public transport access and sustainable travel solutions.
They will continue to engage with stakeholders and the public as the project progresses, ensuring the facility meets the needs of its users and delivers long-term value to the region.
A series of initial works have been undertaken to facilitate the project. Diversions have been in place August 18, 2025, for a period of approximately 12 weeks until roughly the middle of December 2025. These will be clearly signposted.
To allow construction to proceed safely:
• Station Road will be reduced to one lane, with traffic flowing in one direction only.
• Clear diversion routes will be signposted for vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
• Local access for residents and businesses will be maintained at all times. Essential deliveries will still be accommodated.
• Pedestrian access will be available throughout the works.
• Train services will continue to operate as normal, ensuring public transport remains available to all passengers during this period.
Moira Train Station and Moira Park and Ride are available as usual.
Passengers are advised to plan their journey in advance.
