Police were in Portadown and, when a motorist pulled in and spoke to them, the smell of alcohol was detected.

Robert Cartmill (65), of Bracken Lodge in the town, had an alcohol in breath reading of 44mcgs – the legal limit is 35mcgs.

He admitted driving with excess alcohol in breath on August 2 this year.

A defence solicitor said the defendant had a clear driving record for 47 years.

He had gone to an area “due to an emergency”.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan said the defendant had “tried to do a good thing but unfortunately you had alcohol on board”.

At Craigavon Magistrates’ Court the defendant was banned from driving for a year and was fined £100.
