Shock and frustration at sudden closure of Craigavon footbridges ‘for foreseeable future’

Two busy Craigavon footbridges are to be closed “for the foreseeable future” after detailed inspections uncovered structural concerns, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has confirmed.

The sudden closures of the Maple Path and Parkmore footbridges from today (Thursday) has prompted both concern and anger locally.

In a statement, the Department said inspections had identified issues which mean both structures have now effectively reached the end of their serviceable life, and that closure is necessary while a long‑term solution is developed.

A DfI spokesperson said the decision had been taken in the interests of public safety.

“Detailed engineering inspections identified structural concerns, and it has been concluded that closure is necessary while a permanent solution is developed,” the Department said.

“Alternative local walking routes are available and will be signposted where appropriate. While these routes may increase journey times for some users, they will provide access between affected areas.

“The Department recognises the importance of both footbridges to local residents and apologises for any inconvenience caused. However, as the Department’s infrastructure assets age there will always be an eventual need to replace structures that present safety issues or have come to the end of their natural lifespan.

“Further information on future proposals for the bridges will be provided as work progresses.

“The Department would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation.”

The two bridges form part of Craigavon’s distinctive off‑road pathway network, linking residential areas with the lakes, leisure facilities and local amenities.

Alliance MLA for Upper Bann, Eóin Tennyson, said the move would come as a major blow to people who rely on the crossings and criticised the “sudden” nature of the announcement.

“The community of Craigavon will be shocked and frustrated by the sudden closure of the Parkmore and Maple footbridges,” he said.

“The Parkmore and Maple footbridges are well-used and important connections for residents in the area to access Craigavon Lakes and their closure will have an immediate, negative impact on active travel opportunities and access to local amenities.

“This decision will be doubly frustrating given it was only recently that a new footbridge was erected for Moylinn following its unplanned closure for a number of years.

“Alliance will be seeking urgent answers from the Department and the Minister for Infrastructure Liz Kimmins as to how these vital pedestrian links can be swiftly restored.”

Sinn Féin councillors Catherine Nelson and Jude Mallon also voiced “deep concern” at the impact on residents, workers and families who use the routes daily.

Councillor Nelson said: “We are deeply concerned by the closure of the Parkmore and Maple Path footbridges and recognise the significant disruption this will cause to local residents, workers, families, cyclists and pedestrians who rely on these important links every day.

“These bridges are a key part of Craigavon’s unique network of pathways and play an important role in connecting communities safely and sustainably. We fully understand the frustration and inconvenience that many people will now experience as a result of these closures.”

Her party colleague, Cllr Jude Mallon, stressed that public safety had to be the priority, but said swift clarity was needed on what comes next.

“Public safety must always come first, and we note that the decision has been taken following detailed structural assessments. However, our focus now is on doing all we can to ensure that a permanent solution is secured as quickly as possible,” he said.

“We have secured a briefing with Department for Infrastructure officials and will be using that opportunity to seek clarity on the options being considered, the timescales involved and the steps required to reopen these vital links to the public.

“As local representatives, we will continue to work closely with the Department and all relevant stakeholders to press for a permanent solution and the reopening of these vital bridges.”

At this stage there is no indication on how long the footbridges will be closed.
