Lurgan woman who wrongly claimed over £14,000 in benefits must undertake 100 hours of unpaid work

The district judge suggested the unpaid Community Service could be tailored 'around the issue of those who really need benefits and don't get them'

Craigavon Magistrates Court

A Lurgan woman has to been ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work after fraudulently claiming £14,381 in benefits.

Lisa White (48) of Toberhewny Hall, claimed Universal Credit whilst failing to declare a change in circumstances.

She was sentenced at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

She is required to repay any outstanding money wrongly obtained to the Department.

The defendant failed to declare a change of circumstances in relation to benefits between March 2020 and October 2023.

A defence lawyer said the defendant was “regretful” and “ashamed to be before the court”.

It had been, the court heard, a “salutary lesson”.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan suggested that the unpaid Community Service work could be tailored “around the issue of those who really need benefits and don’t get them so it brings about a further realisation as to what you have done wrong”.
