A Craigavon man who assaulted his wife has been given a four months jail term.

Anthony Joseph Hughes, of Hillcrest Mews, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court via video link from prison.

The incident happened on March 28 this year.

A prosecutor said during a call to police the defendant could be heard hitting his wife.

Police arrived and the woman said she had been punched to the face by the defendant, causing a small cut above her eyebrow which was observed by officer.

The defendant had a record which a defence solicitor said “does him no favours”.

The solicitor said the Hughes family has been “through an extremely difficult period”.

She said a son was “found dead on a street in Belfast” and another son is missing and police have issued an appeal for information.

The defendant, who had been on remand in custody since April 4, was jailed for four months.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan said: “I know there are issues in the background but domestic violence cannot be tolerated.”
