Formal proposal to seek car parking enforcement at South Lake Leisure due to ‘clear risk to children’

'To prioritise child safety and ensure pupils are not put at risk while embarking or disembarking from school buses, I will be proposing, at the upcoming committee meeting, that the car park becomes formally enforced'

A formal proposal for ‘enforcement’ of car parking at South Lake Leisure Centre in Craigavon is to be made to ABC Council.

The issue of parking at the venue has been raised on several occasions of late within the Civic Centre.

But now one local representative has said she herself has witnessed “unsafe and inappropriate” parking which “poses a clear risk to children”.

Sinn Féin Councillor Catherine Nelson took to social media and confirmed she will now make a firm proposal at the next leisure committee siting.

She said: “Following concerns raised by a number of bus companies transporting school children to South Lake Leisure Centre for swimming lessons, I attended the site to observe the situation first hand and have spoken directly with bus drivers.

“During this visit, I witnessed unsafe and inappropriate parking that poses a clear risk to children.

“I have raised these concerns with centre management, who share our serious safety worries.

“However, centre staff have no enforcement powers, and attempts to address the issue by calling vehicle registration numbers over the tannoy have proven ineffective.

“To prioritise child safety and ensure pupils are not put at risk while embarking or disembarking from school buses, I will be proposing, at the upcoming committee meeting, that the car park becomes formally enforced.

“The safety of our children is paramount.”
