Calls grow for urgent redevelopment of derelict Moyraverty flats and shops

The long-awaited regeneration of the Moyraverty flats and neighbouring shop complex in central Craigavon must be treated as a priority.

The site, described as being in a state of serious disrepair and “out of step” with surrounding development, has been earmarked for redevelopment for years — but local representatives say progress has stalled far too long.

During a recent meeting with senior Housing Executive officials, Sinn Fein Upper Bann MLA John O’Dowd and party colleague, Councillor Catherine Nelson pressed for urgent action to begin the scheme, which they say could deliver much-needed new housing and modern commercial units.

Said Mr O’Dowd: “Everyone in the community recognises the urgent need to regenerate this site. It’s in a state of disrepair, out of step with surrounding development, and has been ignored for far too long.

“Continued delays are unacceptable, this site must be prioritised and delivered without further excuses.

“We will continue to press the Housing Executive, Department for Communities and other relevant agencies to ensure this redevelopment moves forward at pace, and that new housing and relevant commercial premises are delivered.”

Councillor Nelson added: “This is a strategic location in the heart of Craigavon that should be delivering quality homes and safe, vibrant public space. This site could be a lifeline for so many. We’ve urged the Housing Executive to stop the delays and start delivering the homes Craigavon and upper Bann so clearly need.

“Sinn Féin is committed to delivering sustainable, high-quality housing across Upper Bann, ensuring that families, workers and older residents have access to the homes and communities they deserve.”
