Approval has been given for the demolition of the McDonald’s Restaurant drive-thru at Rushmere in Craigavon.
An application for the work – to make way for additional parking – had been submitted by centre owners, Killahoey Ltd, in April.
Now planners have considered the proposals and given the go-ahead.
There were no objections raised by the public in response to the plans.
Statutory bodies consulted were also satisfied by the application.
Historic Environment Division were contacted given the proximity of the drive-thru to the recently ‘listed’ Marlborough House.
And based on the information provided, HED was “content with the proposals as presented”.
DfI Roads was also consulted and informed council it had “no objections”.
The application, when lodged, involved the demolition of the McDonald’s drive-thru and “creation of new car parking spaces and
consequential reorganisation of car parking layout” at the Rushmere site.
Planning officials, in their formal report, noted: “Through the demolition and clearance of the building – including reconfiguration of car park area – there will be 71 additional spaces when the car parking layout is implemented.”
This would increase overall car parking provision at Rushmere from 1,783 spaces to 1,854.
The 300 sq m restaurant would be removed and a total of 82 parking spaces provided in its place – 71 more than the 11 already offered for use for McDonalds diners.
Planning officials, in their report, ruled: “The proposal is compliant with all relevant policy and the principle of development has been
accepted.”
Armagh I – when we first revealed the application had been lodged – contacted McDonald’s to ascertain its future plans in relation to Craigavon.
Now, almost six months later, no response has yet been forthcoming.
