Site works to demolish a derelict block of flats in Banbridge are set to commence early next year.
In November, a contractor was appointed for the long-awaited demolition of the flats at Chestnut Place, Banbridge, which became a hive of anti-social behaviour in recent years.
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart says that site works, just off the Lurgan Road, are scheduled to commence in early January 2025.
It’s hoped the site will be redeveloped to provide much-needed social housing for the area.
A Housing Executive spokesperson commented: “We are pleased to confirm a contractor was appointed in November to carry out the demolition of the three storey maisonette building at Chestnut Place in Banbridge.
“Following preparatory work, demolition should commence in the new year and the contract is scheduled to last for 20 weeks.
“It is anticipated that once demolition has taken place, and subject to planning approval, the site will be redeveloped with new social housing designed to reflect the needs of the waiting list for the Banbridge area.”
Commenting on the progress, Carla Lockhart said: “This is a welcome step forward for an area in much need of redevelopment.
“While I understand the frustrations caused by delays, I am pleased to confirm that the scheme is now fully approved and on track to begin in January.
“This represents a fresh start for the area and will be a key milestone in improving the local environment for residents. I will continue to monitor progress closely to ensure work proceeds as planned.
“I along with colleagues have consistently advocated for this project to got ahead.”
