Jonesborough: Two men arrested on suspicion of manslaughter released from custody

Two men arrested as part of the investigation into the death of James O’Connor in Jonesborough have been released from custody.

Detectives confirmed that the men, aged 28 and 42 – arrested on suspicion of manslaughter – were released following questioning.

A report will now be prepared for the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

Mr O’Connor, who was 42 years old, sustained serious head injuries in the Edenappa Road area of the village in the early hours of Saturday, May 31. He was taken to hospital but sadly died from his injuries on June 5.

Police confirmed on Tuesday (August 19) that two men had been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. They were taken into custody for questioning before their release.

Superintendent Norman Haslett, District Commander for Newry, Mourne and Down, said at the time of the arrests: “My thoughts are, first and foremost, with Mr O’Connor’s family and loved ones who continue to grieve.

“Mr O’Connor sustained serious head injuries in the Edenappa Road area of Jonesborough. This was in the early hours of Saturday 31 May. He was taken to hospital, but sadly died from his injuries some days later.

“As the investigation continues, we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact officers on 101 quoting reference 35 of 31/05/25.”
