Cordons in place following security alert in Dromore

Police are currently in attendance at a security alert in Dromore this morning, Thursday July 24.

Church Street is not accessible and cordons are in place.

Members of the public and road users are asked to avoid the area.

Meanwhile, detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector Keon said: “At approximately 9.30am, police received a report of a suspicious object in the area.

“Ammunition Technical Officers attended along with crews and remain at the scene.

“Cordons remain in place at this time.

“However, I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or to anyone with CCTV or other footage that could assist with the investigation to contact detectives. At this time, we continue to work to establish a motive for this and are exploring a number of potential motivating factors.”

In April, two viable pipe bombs were found outside a commercial premises during a security alert in the same area.

Officers attended along with Army Technical Officers to examine the objects, which were then made safe and taken away for further forensic examination.

The alert triggered the evacuation of several buildings, including a local nursery school.

A woman in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of possession of explosives in suspicious circumstances.
