Motorists are being warned of a deep, and extremely dangerous, sinkhole that has opened up on a road outside Armagh.
The crater is located on the Artasooly Road in the Tullysaran area.
While it appears rather unsuspecting at first glance, beneath the surface lies a more sinister problem.
One concerned resident contacted Armagh I to highlight the issue and told us that at its shallowest point, the hole is 30cm deep.
However, by shining a torch into the hole, it is in fact over 60cm deep and possibly closer to 90cm deep. The hole easily swallows a two-foot ruler.
This, the resident said, “is not a new or recent problem”.
“If you look at the attached photos, you will see a previous, sunken road ‘repair’, which was also due to another sink hole, at the same location,” he said.
“I recall driving on this road around September 2023 and viewing the first sink hole, which was still open at the time.
“This needs urgent, investigative attention. If this sink hole collapses under the weight of a vehicle, said vehicle will plunge into a hole that is over two foot deep.
“My fear is that a contractor will be sent out to this job and they will just pour a bucket of tar into the hole, which will simply just mask the underlying, reoccurring problem.
“If this issue is to be fixed for the long term, the road will need dug up and investigative works carried out.”
The issue has been reported to the Department for Infrastructure.
