Tyres scattered over Carrigatuke Viewpoint despite ongoing efforts to end dumping

Ongoing efforts to try and prevent dumping at attraction

One of the area’s most picturesque locations has once again been marred by illegal dumping.

And this comes as efforts are ongoing behind the scenes to end these activities.

Carrigatuke Viewpoint is situated directly between Keady and Newtownhamilton in South Armagh.

It sees thousands of people make the pilgrimage up to St Patrick’s Chair alone, as well as those there to take in the breathtaking 360-degree views.

But it has attracted illegal dumpers on regular occasions.

There have been meetings involving all relevant authorities in recent months in the past to try and forge a way forward.

The installation of CCTV to catch those responsible in the act has also been put forward.

But despite best efforts, one local man who visits regularly says the situation remains the same.

“There’s been nothing done,” he said. “Only a few signs have gone up.”

And, as the picture shows, these have done nothing to deter this type of crime.

They have been in place for some considerable time, dating back to the former Armagh City and District Council.

Dozens of tyres have once again been dumped this week – once again showing the need for fresh and concerted action to be taken to prevent this once and for all.
