SRC honours Armagh and Portadown students at ‘Celebration of Success’ awards

Jake who studied the Professional Chef Level 2 Traineeship at the College’s Portadown campus was recognised at the Awards for his success earlier this year at IFEX, NI’s leading trade event for the food, drink, hospitality and retail industries, where he received a Certificate of Merit for his poultry dish.

Students from Armagh, Portadown and surrounding areas were among those rewarded as Southern Regional College held its annual Celebration of Success awards ceremony recently.

The event was held in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry, recognising the many achievements of its students across the academic year.

Over 60 awards were presented at the ceremony.

This included Student of the Year awards across the College’s four faculties, four Rising Star awards, 41 Student Recognition Awards, presentation of Medals of Excellence to students successful at WorldSkills competitions, four Employer Choice Awards, and the ever-popular student choice awards. These were the ‘Most Inspirational Classmate’ and ‘Best Team Player’.

Joe Cullen alongside lecturer David Fairley. Joe, a Body Panel Repair apprentice at SRC’s Portadown campus achieved medal success at the national WorldSkills UK Finals last November when he secured a bronze medal on his debut performance. Joe was recognised at SRC’s Celebration of Success Awards at the Canal Court Hotel for this achievement.

Students from the Armagh, Portadown and surrounding areas recognised at the awards included: Sarah Johnston, from Markethill, who is undertaking the Music Performance & Production L3 Extended Diploma at the Armagh campus. Sarah was named as the ‘Student of the Year’ within SRC’s Faculty of Computing, Design and Academic Studies, for her final year project developing and leading a Makaton choir for Armagh LEAP/Special Education Needs students.

Student of the Year, within the Faculty of Building Engineering and Technology (BUTE) was Peter Voleman from Portadown who is undertaking the Engineering Level 2 Traineeship. Peter has demonstrated ambition undertaking tasks due for completion in the subsequent academic year.

Sarah Johnston from Armagh alongside parents Christine and Alan at SRC’s Celebration of Success Awards. Sarah was awarded ‘Student of the Year’ within the Faculty of Computing, Design & Academic Studies. Sarah who studied the Music Performance & Production Level 3 Extended Diploma at the Armagh campus undertook a final year project which involved setting up a Makaton choir with the College’s LEAP/SEN students.

Thomas Parks from Portadown who is undertaking the ElectroTechnical (Electrical Installation) apprenticeship. Thomas was named as the ‘Rising Star’ within SRC’s BUTE Faculty. Having gained extensive experience across commercial, domestic and industrial electrical installations he has more recently specialised in pharmaceutical installation within ALMAC.

Employer Choice Awards were presented to those students who have impressed their employers through their commitment and dedication to their job roles. Securing this award locally was Brett Kidd from Tandragree, a Level 3 was light motor vehicle apprentice employed by Prentice BMW Portadown.

Engineering degree student Richard Livingstone from Armagh. Richard who is presently undertaking the Engineering BEng (Hons) Degree at the College was recognised at SRC’s Celebration of Success Awards for his involvement in qualifying for the College’s first ever Formula Student competition in Silverstone this July. Richard is one of eight students who came together under the guidance of lecturer Sean MacDiarmada to become the first team from a regional college to reach this stage of the competition.

Jake Allen from Portadown who also competed at IFEX securing a Certificate of Merit for his culinary expertise.

Joseph Cullen from Portadown who secured a bronze medal in Body Panel repair at the WorldSkills UK national competition.

Bridin Loughrin from Keady who was presented with her award by SRC CEO Lee Campbell. Bridin was recognised for her success at national level at the Credit Union Art Competition. Bridin studied the Level 2 Creative Arts and Digital Technology Traineeship.

Whether moving onto further study, employment, or new adventures, we hope that all our students are inspired – not just by their own achievements, but by the achievements of their peers.
