An Armagh community has been left stunned following the sad passing of a young man described as “generous, funny, quiet and kind”.
Kyle Rountree died suddenly on Sunday. He was in his early 20’s.
Kyle, from the Carnavanaghan Road in Collone, is the dearly loved son of Christine and Derrick, and much loved brother of Laura, Anna and Harry, as well as the cherished grandson of Jimmy and the late Carol, Valerie and the late Robert Cooke.
Armagh Hockey led the tributes to a young man held in such high esteem by the many who knew – and cared for – him.
Kyle was a member of the Club.
They said: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kyle’s parents Christine and Derek, sisters Laura and Anna, and brother Harry. Words cannot express the shock and sense of loss we are feeling as a club family at this time.
“Kyle was a gentle young man, with such an infectious laugh and a warm smile. He was loved by so many and a friend to all, especially his team mates.
“He was generous, funny, quiet and kind and had a passion for his club, following in the footsteps of his mum.
“Kyle loved playing hockey for Armagh and was an integral part of the men’s 1st team for many seasons. Kyle had recently commenced coaching the junior boys and we all saw the many leadership qualities that he had, as he volunteered his time so generously to develop the junior boy’s section.
“Thank you for all the good times and special memories Kyle, you will be missed greatly.”
The City of Armagh Rugby Club, where Kyle played growing up, added: “We are deeply saddened to hear the sudden passing of Kyle Rountree. Everybody at the club sends their deepest condolences to the Rountree family, and all of his friends at this very difficult time.
“Kyle played for several of our youth teams growing up. He was a pleasure to coach, and highly respected by all of his team mates.”
Kyle was part of the team that won the Nutty Krust Cup for the U18s in 2019.
Markethill High School added: “On behalf of the entire Markethill High School family, we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the Rountree family following the loss of their much loved son and brother, Kyle, who left us in 2018.
“The Rountree Family are very well known in this area and there is much sadness within the local community. We will continue to keep Mr and Mrs Rountree, Laura (a past pupil), Anna (current Year 8 pupil) and Harry, as well as Kyle’s extended family and friends, in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.”
Many hundreds of tributes have poured in for a man whose passing will leave a huge void.
“A gentleman with the right attitude and it was a pleasure to know and speak to Kyle,” wrote a friend.
Many described him as “a wonderful young man” – “a Beautiful young man with a big heart” – and someone who just made others feel better.
Another posted: “One of the kindest souls ever, he would never walk past without a smile on his face.”
Kyle’s funeral will take place at St Marks Parish Church, Armagh on Wednesday, leaving from his late home at 1pm. Interment afterwards in the adjoining Churchyard.
Family and friends welcome to call at the family home.
