Shock at sudden passing of City of Armagh RFC player – hours after scoring try for club

Adam Hegarty

The City of Armagh rugby community and the wider sporting world are in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of one of their senior players.

Adam Hegarty passed away suddenly on Saturday night after playing for the club’s Second XV earlier that day.

Adam, from Saval in Newry, had scored a try for Armagh second XV on Saturday in what has now, heartbreakingly, become his final appearance for the club.

A death notice released by the family described Adam as the much loved son of Noel and Caroline and brother of Jack and Ellen.

He is deeply regretted by his parents, brother, sister, grandparents Brendan and Peggy, Oliver Turley, and his wider family circle and many friends.

City of Armagh RFC paid a moving tribute to the popular player, describing him as a “true gentleman” who was respected both on and off the field.

In a statement, the club said: “City of Armagh RFC are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of senior player, Adam Hegarty. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Hegarty family and to all of Adam’s friends and teammates at this incredibly difficult time.

“Adam joined our club at youth level and progressed through the youth ranks before moving into our senior teams. Adam was highly respected by coaches, teammates and all who knew him – both on and off the field. A true gentleman who represented our club with pride. He will be greatly missed by the entire City of Armagh RFC community.”

Adam was also well known in GAA circles, having previously played with Saval in County Down before focusing on rugby.

Tributes have poured in from across the sporting community and beyond. Portadown Rugby Football Club extended its sympathies, saying: “On behalf of Portadown Rugby Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to everyone at City of Armagh Rugby Club following the heartbreaking loss of Adam Hegarty. Our thoughts are with Adam’s family, friends, teammates, and the entire Armagh rugby community at this incredibly difficult time. Rugby brings rivals on the field, but it also unites us as one family off it. Today, we stand with you in grief and solidarity. May he rest in peace.”

Friends and teammates described Adam as “one of the nicest lads you could ever meet”, “a great fella with a great attitude” and “an absolute gentleman”. Many spoke of his kindness and his friendship – his passing will leave a huge void for the many who had the privilege of knowing him.

Armagh City Sinn Féin councillor Sarah Duffy said it was “devastating news – thinking of Adam’s family, friends and all who loved him”.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
