Sadness at passing of popular Armagh businessman and motor enthusiast Pat Speer

Instantly recognisable by his dapper appearance, always immaculately attired, with handkerchief in blazer pocket, he passed away at home with his family at Portadown Road, Armagh

Pat Speer

The funeral will take place on Friday of one of Armagh’s most prominent and popular businessmen.

Pat Speer, who lived at Portadown Road, passed away at home earlier today (Tuesday).

Mr Speer has held many business interests and directorships in Armagh over the years.

But it was within the local motor industry that he will be best remembered.

Padraig – or Pat as he was to all – was a well-known car trader for many years and was also regarded as a collector.

Mr Speer was a founding member of the city’s Chamber of Commerce back in the 1980s, and was always keen to see Armagh flourish. He was widely regarded within the local business community and held in high esteem by his peers and wider public.

Mr Speer – who would have turned 80 years of age in April – cut a dashing figure. A familiar face to all, he was instantly recognisable by his dapper appearance, always immaculately attired, with handkerchief in blazer pocket.

A witty and most personable man, he had a great knowledge of Armagh and could regale and captivate with tales from his years living and trading in the city.

According to a death notice, Mr Speer will be reposing at JJ McArdle’s Funeral Home tomorrow (Wednesday), evening from 6pm to 8pm, followed by removal on Thursday to St Patrick’s Cathedral, to arrive at 6pm.

His funeral will take place on Friday, with 11am Mass, after which he will be laid to rest in St Patrick’s Cemetery.

Mr Speer is survived by his loving wife, Bernadette, a former teacher at St Patrick’s High School in Keady, and sisters Delma, Anne, Paula and Alma, while predeceased by sister, Yvonne.

To the entire family circle, we extend our heartfelt sympathy at this time.
