Residents urged to take rubbish to bin lorry stationed at recreation centre

Residents in Tandragee are being urged to take their rubbish to the recreation centre where a bin lorry will be stationed this evening (Wednesday).

Residents across the wider Armagh district have been impacted by an industrial strike which has been ongoing since mid-July.

As a result, many household waste has gone uncollected since.

Alderman Gareth Wilson, commenting this evening, said: “Following my proposal at yesterday’s strike update meeting – there will be a bin lorry in position at Tandragee recreation centre until approx 7.45pm this evening for people to bring bagged rubbish or their wheelie bin for emptying.”

A bin lorry is also in situ at the recycling centre on Station Road in Armagh.

Lord Mayor, Sarah Duffy, also offered up an update on black bin collections in Armagh city this evening.

Collections on the Portadown Road will include: Linseys Hill; Dillon Heights; Killuney & Kilburn Park; Mullinure; Mellifont; and Drumman Heights, Meadows and Hill.

On the Newry and Hamiltonsbawn Roads: Ardmore; Ballynahonemore; Edenaveys; Spring Manor and Meadows; Orangefield; and Drumadd.

If you live in Armagh City and your area is not on the above list, it will be prioritised in the coming days and into the weekend subject to staffing levels.

Meanwhile, a third bin lorry will cover the Grange, Collegelands and Rural Blackwatertown (Ballygasoon, Knockaconey, Aghling, Lislasly, Moaydown, Artasooly, Mullanary, Annahagh, Drumcullen, Ballytroddan Tullysaran Road areas).

The industrial action is a result of what Unite has branded a “hostile environment” that has been created for unions at the council.

In recent weeks a Unite shop steward, based at the depot has been dismissed, while five other Unite reps have faced investigations, or disciplinary hearings, or had their rights to represent workers restricted.

However, a spokesperson for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, commented: “We completely reject UNITE’s claim that management have created a hostile working environment and strongly refute claims that a union representative would be subject to any detriment as a result of or relating to trade union membership.”
