Loughgall Country Park plays host to the third annual Pikekickers Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, with athletes travelling from across Ireland to take part.
Organised by local club Armagh Pikekickers Triathlon Club, the event has grown year-on-year and is officially sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland, the governing body for the sport.
A total of 165 athletes will take on the demanding sprint-distance course, which includes a 750-metre swim, a 20km cycle route from Loughgall to Portadown and back, and finishes with a 5km run around the picturesque country park grounds – the home base for the Pikekickers club.
This year’s field includes a wide range of participants, with ages spanning from 18 to 65. Notably, around 40% of competitors will be tackling their first-ever triathlon, while the gender split sees 40% female and 60% male athletes.
The event is the result of months of meticulous planning, with club members beginning preparations as early as December. On race day, a dedicated team of 40–50 volunteers – made up of club members, family, and friends – will help ensure the smooth and safe running of the event.
The triathlon has also been made possible with the support of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, who have provided essential crowd control equipment and access to the park facilities.
With clear skies forecast and organisers are expecting an exciting and memorable day for both participants and spectators.
