Newry City has once again been awarded the Purple Flag in recognition of its night-life.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has been informed that it has been successful in again securing this prestigious accreditation.

It follows recent confirmation that Armagh City had retained its Purple Flag for its night-life.

Council’s enterprise, regeneration and tourism committee will be informed of the success when it meets on Monday.

Newry City was first awarded Purple Flag status in 2016.

In order to achieve this, a city must meet the required level of standards in regard to its evening and night-time economy offering.

A report going to committee will inform councillors: “Council have worked closely with a whole host of local partners on this project over the last two to three years and the Newry BID in particular has played a huge role in assisting with the delivery of Purple Flag status.”

Towards the end of last year, council had to reapply for its accreditation.

This led to a site assessment carried out in December.

The report adds: “The outcome of this first stage was that Newry City was once again granted Purple Flag status for 2019.

“In receiving this accreditation status, an annual Purple Flag membership fee has now to be paid and council are also invited to attend an awards ceremony in March 2019.”

The committee will be asked on Monday to approve sending the council chairman and a council official to Dublin for the awards, which are due to take place on March 6.
