It’s a case of a New Year, New Me MLA for departing councillor Gareth Wilson who has officially taken up his seat as the Democratic Unionist Party’s new MLA for Newry and Armagh after signing the roll of membership at the Northern Ireland Assembly today (Monday).

DUP leader Gavin Robinson welcomed Mr Wilson to the Assembly, describing him as a long-standing champion for the constituency who will now continue that work as an Assembly member.

“I’m delighted to welcome Gareth to our MLA team today as he officially takes up his seat as MLA for Newry & Armagh,” Mr Robinson said.

“Gareth has always been a champion for the constituency and for the people of that area. He will now continue that focus as their Assembly Member, focused on the issues that matter.

“Whilst others are either attempting to undermine devolution or Northern Ireland itself, the DUP will continue to make Northern Ireland work.

“I look forward to working with Gareth as part of a refreshed and reinvigorated DUP team in the Assembly.”

Mr Wilson succeeds William Irwin, who formally stood down during the Assembly Christmas recess, bringing to an end almost two decades of service representing the constituency.

Speaking after taking up the role, Mr Wilson said it was a privilege to be appointed as the DUP MLA for Newry and Armagh.

“It is an honour to have been selected by the Party to fill this role and I am delighted to have officially taken up post today,” he said.

“I want to pay tribute to William for his hard work and dedication and I intend to build on the strong foundations he has left.

“I will continue to be a strong voice for the people of the Constituency and as the only pro-Union representative for Newry & Armagh within the Assembly I will always seek to promote our place within the United Kingdom and maximise the benefits that brings to everyone.”

Mr Wilson brings significant local government experience to Stormont, having completed 20 unbroken years of service as a Cusher councillor, including a term as Lord Mayor of ABC Council. He also stood as the DUP candidate in last year’s General Election, making him a familiar figure to voters across the constituency.

His appointment had been confirmed by the party in advance of Mr Irwin’s departure, with DUP leader Gavin Robinson previously praising Mr Wilson’s “experience and enthusiasm” and describing him as a natural successor who had worked closely with Mr Irwin in the constituency for almost two decades.

Mr Wilson said he was grateful for the support he has received throughout his political career and looked forward to representing the entire Newry and Armagh constituency at Stormont as he begins the next chapter of his public service.
