A man has been charged to court following two reports of criminal damage and an assault on a shop worker in Markethill earlier this week.
Police have confirmed that the 31-year-old has been charged with a number of offences, including common assault, criminal damage and disorderly behaviour.
He is due to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday, January 7).
As is standard procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
The charges relate to two separate incidents reported in the town on Tuesday, January 6, one of which left a shop worker shaken after being grabbed in a headlock.
Police were first alerted at around 1.25am after receiving a report of windows being broken at a property in the Newry Street area.
Several hours later, shortly before 8.50am, officers received a further report that a man had smashed the front window of a shop on Main Street. During that incident, a member of staff was allegedly assaulted and placed in a headlock.
When police arrived at the scene, the suspect was being detained by members of the public and was taken into custody. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of a number of offences before now being charged to court.
Police have reiterated their appeal for information as enquiries continue.
Anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have dashcam, CCTV or other video footage, is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 242 of 6/1/26.
