A new console, gaming and entertainment centre aimed at children, teenagers and families could be opening in Armagh.
For plans detailing a new proposed venue on Thomas Street in the city have been placed before Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
The venue, if approved, would be known as Play Arena Armagh.
The applicant, Hanna Popova, is seeking approval for a change of use from retail premises at 43 Thomas Street, a property which has had various uses over the years, including as a hairdressing salon.
The intention is to open a “console/gaming and entertainment centre” in the currently vacant shop unit.
Drawings accompanying the application indicate a reception and waiting space to the front, them opening onto a main gaming area. There would be two further separate ‘gaming rooms’ towards the rear, linked by a corridor running from the front to the rear of the premises.
The application also includes toilet provision, a staff kitchen and storage.
A supporting statement forwarded to planning officials who will consider the proposals describe the intended enterprise as a “small console gaming and entertainment centre”.
And it adds: “The proposed business will operate as a quiet, family-friendly gaming venue offering PlayStation console gaming experiences.
“The premises will include gaming stations, seating areas and a reception desk for customer check-in.”
There are no internal structural alterations planned, nor any changes to the exterior of the building.
The supporting statement explains: “The proposal involves only the installation of gaming consoles, televisions, seating and LED decorative lighting within the existing space.”
And in terms of target audience, it further states: “The venue will operate as a controlled environment primarily serving children, teenagers and families.
“No alcohol will be sold or consumed on site. No gambling activities, arcade machines, or casino facilities will be provided. No hot food preparation is proposed.
“The use is not expected to generate significant noise, traffic or disturbance to neighbouring properties. The operation will be supervised at all times to ensure appropriate behaviour and compliance with safety standards.”
The new Play Arena outlet would, if given the go-ahead, open from 10am until 10pm daily.
“The proposal represents a low-impact leisure use suitable for a town centre location and will contribute positively to local amenities by providing a safe recreational space for young people and families,” the supporting documentation concludes.
The application will be advertised shortly with a decision expected in due course.
