Following a year of sustained lobbying, works have finally been conducted to clear overgrown and unsafe footpath along a main arterial route outside Armagh city.
The maintenance works were conducted on the Loughgall Road between Armagh City and Salters Grange.
Welcoming the progress, Councillor Scott Armstrong – who lobbied for the works over the last year – said: “With the initial success of the Killylea Road in 2024, I was contacted by both walkers and runners who use the Loughgall Road to get the same done for this footpath.
“Unfortunately this footpath was becoming very difficult to use, and often people could be seen walking on the road, making this entire section of road unsafe. The new improvements are very welcome.”
Cllr Armstrong continued: “Active Travel is very important. Allowing vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians to move around safely is paramount in todays society.
“Current estimates from the Department for Infrastructure state that approximately £50million is spent on Active Travel per year.
“Whilst this is encouraging, most of this money has been on new capital projects. Whilst there is a need to build new footpaths to encourage Active Travel, this cannot be at the expense of our existing network.”
