Rock of Ages

NYPA Adults present: “Rock of Ages”.

It is 1987, and the fabled West Hollywood club the Bourbon Room is the seedy, sordid, vibrant heart of the Sunset Strip. The music venue has seen better days, but as run by chilled-out former rock impresario Dennis Dupree, and tended to by Dennis’s mischievous assistant Lonny, it is the essence of rock and roll.

When bright-eyed young hopeful Sherrie Christian, a small-town girl who wants to make it as an actress, arrives in town, she bumps into Drew, a Bourbon Room busboy with dreams of rock and roll stardom. Rock of Ages is a big, brash, energetic tribute to classic rock, to over-the-top ballads and fierce guitar, to the gritty glamour and rough energy of the Sunset Strip. This jukebox musical features ‘80s hits such as “We Built this City”, “I Wanna Rock”, and “Don’t Stop Believin’”.

The Man Who Swallowed a Dictionary

This one-man show chronicles the remarkable life of ex-UVF and PUP politician, David Ervine from the backstreets of East Belfast and imprisonment in Long Kesh, to political negotiations at the White House and Downing Street. And from his personal family tragedies to becoming the man who is widely regarded as the one who did most to deliver the Protestant working class to support the Good Friday Agreement.

As well as being an important figure in the history of Ulster loyalism, Ervine was also known for his grasp of the English language and capacity for using ‘big words’ in television interviews, hence the title of the play. It’s a remarkable story, providing a great insight into not just the man but the Protestant community in the most turbulent period of the Troubles.

Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters

Set (very loosely) against the backdrop of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, Terry Pratchett takes the well-known story and turns it up ‘til the knob comes off. This play has it all! A wicked Duke and Duchess, the ghost of a murdered King, dim soldiers, strolling players, a land in peril.

And who stands between the Kingdom and destruction? Three witches. Granny Weatherwax (intolerant, self-opinionated, powerful), Nanny Ogg (down-to-earth, vulgar) and Magrat Garlick (naïve, fond of occult jewellery and bunnies). With such a combination of characters, what could possibly go wrong?
