Engineer’s report submitted ahead of trial of man accused of causing death of three in Marketill crash

An engineer’s report has now been submitted to the prosecution ahead of the trial of a 21-year-old man accused of causing a four-vehicle car crash which claimed the lives of three people in 2023.

The trial of Josh McGleenan, from Ashveagh in Benburb, is set for April 27 where he will face eight charges arising from a road traffic collision on the Gosford Road in Markethill on November 4, 2023.

McGleenan is accused of causing the deaths of husband and wife Patrick and Ciera Grimley, as well as their friend Ciara McElvanna, by driving dangerously on the Gosford Road in Markethill.

He is also accused of four counts of causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving and a final charge of dangerous driving between Ashveagh, Benburb and the Gosford Road.

McGleenan, who was aged 18 at the time of the incident, denies all charges against him.

At a review of the case in Newry Crown Court on Friday McGleenan’s defence counsel, Mark O’Connor, explained that an engineer’s report had been sought and obtained and had now been handed over to the prosecution.

His Honour Judge Paul Ramsey KC requested that a copy of the engineer’s report also be available to the court adding that it would be “helpful” to see it in advance.

The case has been affected by recent strike action but all parties are hopeful it will proceed on April 27.

McGleenan remains on continuing bail in the meantime.
