Armagh’s high flood risk as Met Office issue 12-hour thunderstorm warning

Callan River flooding

Heavy rain and thunderstorms look set to bring heavy flooding across Co Armagh from this evening (Friday) into the weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy showers and thunderstorms which they say will bring difficult travelling conditions and localised flooding.

The warning says “some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures”.

The warning comes into place at 7pm on Friday and lasts until 10am on Saturday.

Last summer, a number of homes and businesses in Co Armagh, especially around the Lurgan area, were destroyed as a result of flooding.

In July, 2018 a month’s worth of rain fell over a traumatic 24-hour period.

However, the outlook isn’t all doom and gloom as temperatures will rise as high as 25 degrees next week with Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday seeing the best of the weather.

It won’t be sustained though, as the rain will come back heading into next weekend but temperatures will remain in the 20s.
