Tributes to ‘one of life’s greats’ and St Peter’s GAC Lurgan ‘legend’

'Such a great loss to his family, his club and Lurgan'

Tributes have been paid following the passing of ‘one of life’s greats’ and ‘true St Peter’s legend’, Michael ‘Mickey’ Starkey.

Throughout Lurgan Mickey was known first and foremost as a gentleman. He was a great neighbour and supportive friend to many; never letting a friendly face pass him by without a quick chat.

His kind words and demeanor left a lasting impression on all he met.

Mickey was also regarded as St Peter’s GAC man through and through – a club he devoted his life to, thoroughly supported and where he made many a friend.

In learning of his passing, a spokesperson for his beloved club said: “The Committees and Members of St Peter’s CLG, An Lorgain, are deeply saddened to learn of the death of our dear friend, life member and Hall of Fame recipient – Michael (Mick) Starkey (RIP).

“We pray especially for his dearly beloved wife Mona; their children Pauline, Kevin and Peter; grandchildren – Michelle, Carol, Laura, Callum, Megan-Kate, Ryan and Grace; and extend our condolences to Mick’s loving sister Clare and the wide circle of family and friends.

“May Michael rest in peace. Mary Queen of the Gael have mercy on his soul. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”

A fellow clubman’s comment reveals the impact that Mickey’s words often had: “RIP Mick. An absolute gentleman and always remember the conversation he had with me after my last match as manager in 2019 against Granemore in the senior championship. Mick’s and Benedict Lavery’s comments to me will live long in my memory. Rest in peace.”

Said another: “Such a great loss to his family, his club and Lurgan. The kindest of gentlemen… so sorry to hear this news. Condolences to Mona and all the family. RIP Micky.”

Michael passed away peacefully on Thursday May 23 at Craigavon Area Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was the dearly beloved husband of Mona, much loved father of Pauline (Wilson), Kevin and Peter, beloved father-in-law of Daniel and Tracy, and loving granda to Michelle, Carol, Laura, Callum, Megan-Kate, Ryan and Grace, great granda to Ivy and Kody, and beloved brother of Clare Mulholland.

A funeral service will take place on Sunday at 12.45pm from his late residence to St Peter’s Church for 1.30pm Requiem Mass.

Interment afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery.

Michael’s Requiem Mass can be viewed on St Peter’s Church webcam.

The family have requested donations in lieu of flowers if desired to Macmillan Cancer Support care of Jack McLearnon & Son Funeral Directors, Lurgan.
