Viable pipe bomb type device confirmed as Cookstown security alert ends

"Cordons have now been lifted and residents who were evacuated from their homes have been able to return."

A viable pipe bomb type device was behind a security alert in Cookstown.

The operation – at Millburn Close – concluded after tea-time tonight (Friday).

Police and Ammunition Technical Officers attended the scene following the discovery of a suspicious object shortly after midday.

After examination, this was found to be a viable pipe bomb type device.

Detective Inspector Michael Winters said: “Cordons have now been lifted and residents who were evacuated from their homes have been able to return.

“Enquiries are continuing and we would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during this time.
