Armagh vs Cavan

It has the makings of a long and prosperous summer for Armagh as they overcame promotion-chasing Cavan to book their place in the Division Two decider later this month.

And it’s back to the top table in 2025 for the Orchard county following the disappointment of last year’s final-day relegation from Division One.

With a week to spare – and the matter of a pressure-free contest away to Cork next weekend – Armagh can set their sights firmly on a Croke Park showdown with Donegal.

It’ll be a pre-cursor to an Ulster championship campaign that has Armagh as firm favourites to reach a second successive Ulster decider. It’ll be a missed opportunity if they don’t given Tyrone, Derry and Donegal are all in the other half of the draw. An in-form Down might have something to say about that, however.

On Saturday though – in front of another healthy crowd at the Box-it Athletic Grounds – Armagh saw off the surprisingly meagre challenge of Cavan.

The game was done and dusted by half-time thanks to first half goals from Peter McGrane and Conor Turbitt – from a penalty. The Breffnimen were never likely to claw back the 14-point deficit. And they didn’t, with the game finishing Armagh 2-21 Cavan 0-12.

In the end, it was a bit of a canter for McGeeney’s men who can enjoy an away day against Cork next Saturday evening. Blaine Hughes will be determined to keep a clean sheet having done so for the entire league campaign to date..
