Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd recognised the “valuable contribution” of community transport during a visit to Down Armagh Rural Transport (DART) hub in Portadown.
DART delivers Community Transport services in the Craigavon, Lurgan, Portadown and surrounding rural areas.
The Department for Infrastructure directly funds 11 rural community transport partnerships (RCTPs) to deliver Dial-a-Lift (DAL) services and also provides funding for urban services through the Disability Action Transport Scheme (DATS).
DART delivered over 11,300 trips across the DAL and DATS services in 2023-24.
Minister O’Dowd met the organisation and service users on Wednesday to hear about the benefits of the service.
In September, the Minister confirmed a funding increase of 4.2% for community transport providers to support rising costs and committed to maintaining this level of funding in 2025/26, subject to allocation of funds to the Department for Infrastructure.
Minister O’Dowd said: “I am very aware of the valuable contribution made by community transport.
“It is important to have safe, reliable and affordable access to local services and I know these services can help reduce social isolation and offer an opportunity for independence.
“I appreciate this opportunity to see first-hand the hard work and commitment of those involved in delivering community transport in your local community; from the staff, drivers, volunteers, Trustees and, of course, members.
“I hope my visit today gives an indication of my support and commitment towards community transport to continue to deliver dependable local transport to those who need these services the most.”
