Tributes have been pouring in following the passing of one of Monaghan’s greatest ever GAA players, Eugene ‘Nudie’ Hughes, who has died at the age of 67.
The Castleblayney Faughs and Monaghan GAA legend, widely regarded as one of Ulster’s finest players, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer, which he had faced with remarkable positivity since his diagnosis in 2018.
A three-time All-Star winner, Hughes was Monaghan’s first ever recipient of the honour in 1979, with two more awards following in 1985 and 1989 – remarkable achievements that coincided with the county’s Ulster Championship triumphs.
Known for his versatility, Hughes was recognised as an All-Star both in defence and attack – a rare distinction in Gaelic football. He also collected a Railway Cup medal with Ulster in 1984 and won two Ulster club titles with his beloved Castleblayney Faughs.
In 2024, his immense contribution to Gaelic games was recognised when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gaelic Players Association.
In a heartfelt statement, Monaghan GAA said they had learned of his passing with “deep and profound sadness”, describing him as “a true legend of Monaghan football and a three-time All-Star recipient.”
The statement continued: “Nudie’s contribution to our county, both on and off the field, was immense. His skill, passion and leadership inspired generations, and his name will forever be synonymous with Monaghan’s proud footballing tradition.
“Nudie fought his illness with immense courage and dignity, just as he played the game – with heart and determination.
“We extend our sincerest condolences to his wife Teresa, his family, friends, and all who mourn his passing. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
Crossmaglen Rangers described Hughes as “a giant of the game”, recalling his friendship and regular attendance at the club’s annual golf classic.
“To his wife Teresa, children, the Hughes family and our fellow Gaels at Castleblayney Faughs GFC and Monaghan GAA, our deepest condolences on your huge loss.
“Nudie will be forever remembered as one of the greatest to don the blue and white.”
Funeral arrangements will be confirmed in due course.
