A retired Canadian Air Force officer was part of a three-generation family to pay a special visit to Gilford.
Alderman Glenn Barr welcomed his cousin, Bill Sergeant, along with Bill’s wife Monica, daughter Lee-Ann, and grandchildren, who travelled from Canada to visit key historical sites in the local area — including the Gilford War Memorial.
Bill’s grandfather, Samuel Sergeant, was the brother of Alderman Barr’s great-grandfather, George Sergeant.
Both men lost their younger brother, Thomas Sergeant, on the first day of the Somme offensive, July 1, 1916.
Thomas’s name is proudly inscribed on the Gilford War Memorial — a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by local families during the Great War.
A special thank you to Stramore Road Community Association who gifted Bill and his family a book on the War Memorial and signed by author Richard Edgar.
Speaking about the visit, Alderman Barr, said: “It is an honour to welcome Bill to Gilford and to stand together at the memorial that bears our family name. The story of Thomas is one of bravery and sacrifice, and it is deeply moving to share this moment with my cousin from across the Atlantic. His visit is a powerful reminder of how the legacy of those who served continues to connect families across generations and continents.”
In addition, Alderman Barr confirmed that he has been pressing Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council to undertake much-needed maintenance and restoration of the Gilford War Memorial.

“I am pleased to report that the Council has recently carried out a successful test clean of the memorial, which is the first step in ensuring this important landmark is preserved for future generations. I will continue to push for the full restoration to be completed as soon as possible.”
Bill’s visit forms part of a wider itinerary exploring local heritage sites, offering a chance to reflect on the shared history between Northern Ireland and Canada — and the enduring bonds forged in times of service and sacrifice.
