Local Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has said tackling inequalities is a key factor in suicide prevention.
Speaking on World Suicide Prevention Day, the Newry & Armagh MLA said: “Suicide has touched so many families and communities right across Ireland. It impacts on young and old, male and female, from all walks of life.
“While suicide affects everyone, it has been well documented that poverty and poor health and education have a huge impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing. These can lead to addiction problems and low self esteem which in turn can increase vulnerability and isolation.”
The MLA said it was essential to challenge inequalities and deprivation and added: “We can help prevent suicide by challenging inequalities and deprivation and promoting positive mental health. Programmes have been put in place to tackle suicide in areas of high deprivation and it is crucial these services are supported and expanded.
“I would encourage anyone who is experiencing a personal crisis to reach out and seek help. There are many organisations, such as The Samaritans, Lifeline, PIPS Newry & Mourne and the Naoimh Louise Foundation and others who provide great help and support to those in need.”
