Students fined for playing loud music

THREE students have been fined £150 each for making too much noise at a house in Belfast’s main student area.

Gary Kelly, from Ballyhoy Road, Kieran Pattison, from Drumbreda Crescent and Matthew Fearon, from Drumbreda Gardens, were also ordered to pay court costs of £72 each.

The three Armagh men were fined after they contravened a warning notice from Belfast City Council on February 22, 2012 for playing loud music at a house in Palestine Street in the Holylands area.

Hundreds of new and returning students have been arriving in Belfast this week as the new university term gets under way.

Since the weekend, staff from the council’s night-time noise team have carried out 75 inspections in the university area; one fixed penalty notice — a £110 on-the-spot fine — has been issued as well as 19 warning notices for excessive noise. There have also been 10 verbal warnings.
